Interlibrary Loan (ILL) & Document Delivery
Contact: Information Desk (509) 372-7430
HTL staff have expertise in obtaining books, journal articles, technical reports, conference proceedings, and dissertations from other libraries or vendors worldwide for PNNL staff and eligible Hanford Site staff. These services are provided in accordance with copyright laws and guidelines.
A $23.00 per item HTL service fee will be charged for all requests, plus additional charges (if any) from the provider.
Every attempt will be made to provide requested items in an electronic format. Due to copyright restrictions electronic delivery is only available to PNNL staff. If paper copies are preferred, that should be noted on the request. If the "faster delivery option" is chosen, it is likely the item will only be supplied in paper and we will NOT be able to provide an electronic copy. We will send the item in the format provided by the supplier since copyright guidelines do not allow us to alter the format.
PNNL staff have a choice in document delivery options:
- REGULAR SERVICE -- Lower cost/regular delivery eliminates the copyright fee, potentially reducing costs by as much as 50%. These requests will be sent to other libraries and are generally filled within 3-5 days. Often delivery may be faster but sometimes it can take up to two weeks. Costs from other libraries vary; sample costs range from $0.00 to $20.00. Requests received from other libraries are often, although not always, sent in a PDF format. If you aren't in a hurry and want to keep your costs down, this may be the best option, especially if you want an electronic copy.
- FASTER SERVICE -- Higher cost/faster delivery is for those who require a quick turnaround and can accept a paper copy. These requests will be sent to commercial providers and will be charged the copyright fee. Requests are often filled within 24 hours. Costs include the provider's service fee (usually ranging from $13.00-$16.00) plus copyright fees, which can range from $0 to $75.00 or more; the average copyright fee is ~$30.00 per article. For items needed quickly and when cost is less important, this may be the best option. However, these commercial providers usually provide paper copies only.
All document delivery requests from eligible Hanford site staff and Corporate Account holders will be ordered through commercial providers (the higher cost/faster delivery option) to ensure appropriate copyright fees are paid. These commercial providers generally provide paper copies only.
Remember to check the library catalog, Leona, before ordering materials to make sure the library doesn't already have what you want.

NOTE TO LIBRARIES wanting to borrow materials from our collection: we provide ILL services only via OCLC and borrowing libraries must participate in IFM (Interlibrary Loan Fee Management).
